The Balami Sheep Breed Of Nigeria
Balami can be found most in Borno State and other areas in North-East Nigeria. The breed originates from Niger Republic. This particular sheep breed is big and the coat/skin color is predominantly white. Balami has a convex face; large, droopy earlobes; and a thin, long tail. It has a dewlap-like fold of skin with white mane. Horns are prominent in rams and are usually absent in ewes. Balami can survive in dry or arid or wet environments. This breed is known for its potential to produce meat. The Balami is fast growing and attains a weaning weight of 18 kg in 12 weeks. The yearling weight is 35 40kg for ewes and 45 60kg for rams.
Compared to the Sudanese breed, the Balami is superior in litter size with a mean of 1.22 lambs per ewe lambing compared to 1.12 in the Desert Sudanese sheep. In terms of reproductive traits, the Balami is marginally superior to the Desert Sudanese sheep. The Balami is heavier at all ages than the Desert Sudanese sheep.
The Balami is relatively expensive compared to other breeds in Nigeria. Although it is desirable, most farmers find it difficult to purchase due to high cost. An alternative is to artificially breed your ewes of other breeds with the semen of Balami. This helps in increasing growth and weight performance of the lambs as cross breeding provides the advantage of hybrid vigour (heterosis).
